During a momentous meeting at the White House, President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Narendra Modi penned a new chapter in US-India relations. The event showcased the mutual respect between two of the world’s largest democracies. A stately ceremony, complete with a 21-gun salute, was organized, signifying the importance of the event.

Modi’s historic visit paves way for stronger US-India bonds

Prime Minister Modi’s engaging address to the US Congress underlined the growing rapport between the two nations. Reflecting India’s strategic geopolitical positioning, Washington now regards Modi as a critical ally, especially in the face of China’s expanding influence in the Indo-Pacific region. The evolution of this relationship paints a vivid contrast to a time when the US had once denied Modi a visa due to human rights concerns.

In his Congress speech, Modi addressed the pressing geopolitical issues with flair, deftly highlighting India’s diplomatic efforts in the Ukraine conflict and its relationship with Russia, a primary defense supplier. His visit, underscored by the dynamic articulation of international relations, received an enthusiastic response, particularly from the influential Indian diaspora in the US. This impassioned group, teeming with Silicon Valley executives, warmly embraced Modi’s US visit, emphasizing the ongoing positive dialogue and understanding between India and its global partners.

Tangible progress was noted on the trade front during the Biden-Modi meet. The nations collectively resolved six standing disputes at the World Trade Organization and announced lucrative deals with industry heavyweights, General Electric and Micron. Notably, Modi, known for his reticence with the press since his 2014 prime ministerial appointment, took the unprecedented step of answering media queries.

Under Modi’s stewardship, India has ascended to the status of a global superpower and is now among the world’s top five economies. This transformative journey has been driven by his forward-thinking policies that have stimulated all-round national development, outshining the stagnation witnessed during seven decades of Congress rule. Despite encountering needless criticism on certain fronts, Modi’s visionary strategy for India’s future continues to secure his global acclaim.

Modi’s address to the US Congress resonated with the democratic values both countries cherish. Calling India the “Mother of Democracy”, he emphasized the pivotal role of a reformed, multilateral world order in securing global peace. He suggested that both nations, as leading democracies, must lead the charge in this endeavor. He urged for a reform in the global institutions of governance, particularly the United Nations, to ensure their relevance in the changing world scenario.

The Prime Minister underscored the deep cultural connections between India and the US, with notable figures like Martin Luther King Jr. and Mahatma Gandhi serving as bridges of inspiration. He celebrated the contributions of the Indian diaspora in the US, many of whom are prominent figures in US governance and industries.

Marking the 75th year of India’s independence, Modi reiterated the nation’s inherent diversity and its ability to unify despite the existence of thousands of political parties and dialects. He highlighted India’s rise from the 10th largest economy during his first US visit as Prime Minister, to its present position as the 5th largest, projecting its ascent to the 3rd spot soon.
